Job costing for contractors · by VERSA Technologies

Know if you're making money on every job, while the job is still running.

VERSA Contractor tracks labor, materials and expenses against your contract value. Every job shows its real margin in green, yellow or red, before you send the final invoice.

Pilot contractors use it free for 60 to 90 days. You don't need a credit card.

Your best guess at job profit is a spreadsheet.

Most contractors find out what a job really made after it's closed. By then, the money is gone.

  1. Crumpled store receipts and a handwritten weekly timesheet on a clipboard, piled on a truck dashboard.

    Today

Hours on paper, receipts in the truck

Labor and material costs live in five different places, so nobody sees the full picture.

  2. A laptop open to a dense spreadsheet next to a tall stack of clipped invoices on a desk.

    End of month

Your accountant tells you what happened

That works for taxes, but it comes too late to fix a job that's losing money.

  3. Late at night at a kitchen table, someone marks up a final invoice next to a laptop and a calculator.

    After the final invoice

You find out you lost money

And you bid the next job the same way, because you never saw where it went wrong.

Live margin on every job, in three steps.

  1. Log hours by job

Your crew logs time to the right project, and VERSA Contractor calculates labor cost from each worker's rate.

  2. Add materials and expenses

You assign every purchase to a job and a category, so nothing gets buried in "general overhead".

  3. See estimated vs. actual

Your margin updates as costs come in, and you see which jobs are over budget.

If you use QuickBooks, keep using it. VERSA Contractor handles job costing, and your books stay where they are.

The dashboard

Green, yellow or red. Every job, at a glance.

One list with every active job and its margin so far. You decide what counts as green, yellow and red for your company. Out of the box, green is a 20% margin or better, yellow is 10% to 20%, and red is under 10%.

Your crew logs their hours without seeing job costs or margins.

Who it's for

Built for contractors with 5 to 30 people.

VERSA Contractor is for U.S. contractors with 5 to 30 people and $500K to $5M in annual revenue. When we count people, we count your W-2 employees plus the 1099 crew that works with you regularly.

  • Under 5 people

You probably keep every job in your head, and that still works. It's likely too early for this.

  • Over 30 people

You probably have an accountant or a PM in-house and software already. This is likely not for you.
